Viking Moses New Single! Werewolves in the City!
22/09/06
“Werewolves in the City are a big problem...”
The great art of the seasonal musical treat has been lost—from REM covering Syd Barrett’s Dark Globe as a Christmas flexi treat or Roky Erikson’s sounds of monsterism— Werewolves in the City resurrects this tradition with its homage to Halloween. Viking Moses moves back to the influences of Butthole Surfers and Meat Puppets, combining punk and psychedelia, the ‘60s and the ‘80s, sheer sonic fuckedup-ness and songcraft (a near unthinkable combo) in his electronic Halloween treat of ‘Werewolves in the City’; add innovation, humour, repulsiveness, big drumbeats and bone-rattling explosions as he howls at the moon ‘Werewolves in the City Are ABig Problem/Why don’t you get out of the sky and stop them/Tearing Up Children, Children in the night/Last night I found a kid’s head on my bike.’ Classic.

07/09/06Viking Moses! – Crosses
Brendon Massei’s first album under this Nordic-cum-Biblical moniker left DiS’s Sam Lewis clutching at superlatives like kids do candy when the storekeeper’s back’s turned. “A more introverted album than anything produced by peers and touring-partners like Devendra Banhart or Akron/Family, being closer to the warm intimacy of Little Wings than the more consciously talismanic Banhart,” penned Mr Lewis in his opening paragraph, prior to leading us readers a merry lexical dance that left us desperate to hear whether or not the hyperbole was justified. It’s perhaps needless to say, given Crosses’ inclusion here, that the purple-tinged prose was perfectly appropriate. An album of love that demands to be loved, Crosses could prove to be something of a sleeper hit for its maker – simple though it is, its charm and sincerity are undeniable.

‘Devendra’s mate pours his heart out’
On first listen, Crosses promises to be the most tweest album ever. After all, it leads with an acoustic version of ‘Michael Row The Boat Ashore’ - already one of the hippiest hyms this side of a church picnic - reworked as a song for a lost lover. Happily it avoids collasping into any goodwill sapping sappiness instead treading a sparse delicate path to folk Edan.

Viking Moses Plays the Pigeon Hole On the 5th of September
04/09/06Alongside Hush Arbours - 7pm at St Moritz, 159 Wardour Street
Big story arcs that go through several songs with returning themes and powerful dynamics… Viking Moses has toured with and/or supported today’s similar international music artists, such as: Devendra Banhart, Cat Power, Calvin Johnson, Ted Leo, Little Wings, Microphones, Mirah, Mountain Goats, Joanna Newsom, Scout Niblett, Will Oldham, Songs Ohia, and more.
Autobiography: I was born to two truck drivers in Midland, Michigan, 1979. I was brought up on a Missouri Ozark farm and also on the desert sands of Las Vegas, Nevada. Back and forth, y’see. Anymore, I write songs and travel far lengths and reaches to sing them for people—record by whichever means possible. SK showed up around summer 2000. Our friendship has earned me the title “Viking Moses”. I am fond of, or perhaps accustomed to, along with this title, a small room, and short spells of attention. I recently visited for the first time, the Little America truckstop in Little America, Wyoming, where my parents are said to’ve conceived me. I bought a postcard with an aerial view of the parking lot, where this probably happened.
