Viking Moses New Single! Werewolves in the City!

22/09/06

“Werewolves in the City are a big problem...”

The great art of the seasonal musical treat has been lost—from REM covering Syd Barrett’s Dark Globe as a Christmas flexi treat or Roky Erikson’s sounds of monsterism— Werewolves in the City resurrects this tradition with its homage to Halloween.  Viking Moses moves back to the influences of Butthole Surfers and Meat Puppets, combining punk and psychedelia, the ‘60s and the ‘80s, sheer sonic fuckedup-ness and songcraft (a near unthinkable combo) in his electronic Halloween treat of ‘Werewolves in the City’; add innovation, humour, repulsiveness, big drumbeats and bone-rattling explosions as he howls at the moon ‘Werewolves in the City Are ABig Problem/Why don’t you get out of the sky and stop them/Tearing Up Children, Children in the night/Last night I found a kid’s head on my bike.’ Classic.

Drownedinsound.com chose Viking Moses as their August pick....

07/09/06

Viking Moses! – Crosses
Brendon Massei’s first album under this Nordic-cum-Biblical moniker left DiS’s Sam Lewis clutching at superlatives like kids do candy when the storekeeper’s back’s turned. “A more introverted album than anything produced by peers and touring-partners like Devendra Banhart or Akron/Family, being closer to the warm intimacy of Little Wings than the more consciously talismanic Banhart,” penned Mr Lewis in his opening paragraph, prior to leading us readers a merry lexical dance that left us desperate to hear whether or not the hyperbole was justified. It’s perhaps needless to say, given Crosses’ inclusion here, that the purple-tinged prose was perfectly appropriate. An album of love that demands to be loved, Crosses could prove to be something of a sleeper hit for its maker – simple though it is, its charm and sincerity are undeniable.

Viking Moses
Crosses
Poptones
8/10

‘Devendra’s mate pours his heart out’

On first listen, Crosses promises to be the most tweest album ever.  After all, it leads with an acoustic version of ‘Michael Row The Boat Ashore’ - already one of the hippiest hyms this side of a church picnic - reworked as a song for a lost lover.  Happily it avoids collasping into any goodwill sapping sappiness instead treading a sparse delicate path to folk Edan.

Viking Moses Plays the Pigeon Hole On the 5th of September

04/09/06

Alongside Hush Arbours - 7pm at St Moritz, 159 Wardour Street

Big story arcs that go through several songs with returning themes and powerful dynamics… Viking Moses has toured with and/or supported today’s similar international music artists, such as: Devendra Banhart, Cat Power, Calvin Johnson, Ted Leo, Little Wings, Microphones, Mirah, Mountain Goats, Joanna Newsom, Scout Niblett, Will Oldham, Songs Ohia, and more.

Autobiography: I was born to two truck drivers in Midland, Michigan, 1979. I was brought up on a Missouri Ozark farm and also on the desert sands of Las Vegas, Nevada. Back and forth, y’see. Anymore, I write songs and travel far lengths and reaches to sing them for people—record by whichever means possible. SK showed up around summer 2000. Our friendship has earned me the title “Viking Moses”. I am fond of, or perhaps accustomed to, along with this title, a small room, and short spells of attention. I recently visited for the first time, the Little America truckstop in Little America, Wyoming, where my parents are said to’ve conceived me. I bought a postcard with an aerial view of the parking lot, where this probably happened.

ONE VIKING, A GUITAR AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT

31/08/06

Although public transport may limit what solo artist Viking Moses can bring to his up-coming gig in the city, it will not affect his impressive sound.

The Missouri-based singer, whose real name is Brendon Massei, is set to take the stage at the Adelphi later this month, as long as the trains and buses are in working order.

DROWNED IN SOUND REVIEW VIKING MOSES AND GIVE IT 8/10 SHOCK...

28/08/06

In comparison to the metropolitan furnace London has become recently, Viking Moses! (a.k.a. Missouri resident Brendon Massei) seems to belong to a different planet altogether. As I sweat and swelter over my computer, a chorus of workmen’s drills serenading me from outside, he seems implacably calm, a figure totally removed from the city. Crosses, Massei’s first album under said moniker, is a more introverted album than anything produced by peers and touring-partners like Devendra Banhart or Akron/Family, being closer to the warm intimacy of Little Wings than the more consciously talismanic Banhart.

VIKING MOSES CROSSES OUT ON MONDAY!

25/08/06

Artist: Viking Moses
Title: Crosses
Release Date: 28 August 2006
To order your own copy please click here.

Viking Moses aka Brendon Massei is mercurial and an ever-changing singer-songwriter. If anyone who has encountered his live shows over the past year will attest, he is a one-man band that is hard to pigeon hole. Freak-folk-americana-wyrd-noise-drone? Forget about it. Viking Moses enthuses about influences from Dolly Parton to Nirvana. And live? He changes; from the fragile atmospherics of his recorded work to the total and complete abandonment to “gospel-preaching-over-noise, in the spirit of soul or free jazz”.

And somehow those dual influences have served Viking Moses well ... if anyone has witnessed his live shows can testify; he becomes possessed by the Devil and then morphs into electric white noise understands but at the sametime he could release an album like ‘Crosses’, a child-like album of love songs dedicated to a girl named ‘Emma’.

Americana UK Review Viking Moses 'Crosses'

18/08/06

The Viking Moses ‘Crosses’ is out on Poptones Recording Corporation on the 28th of August.  To get your own copy please click here.

Sinister and beguiling song cycle celebrates an odd love story

The Viking Moses (aka Brendon Massei) is yet another graduate from the school of Devandra Banhart. Riding the new wave of new folk with simple acoustic settings, intimate vocals and at times a childlike simplicity, he’s fashioned an album that worms its way into your head with its allusions to well remembered hymns and the use of repetitive structures. A song cycle based on a relationship Massei had with a muse named Emma, the album moves from songs he sang with her to post breakup musings and a yearning to rekindle their flame. Opening song “Still my Home” uses the tune and chorus from Michael Row Your Boat Ashore and lulls the listener into a false sense of security, wrapped in a familiar memory.

Viking Moses at the York Fibbers on the 16th of August..

10/08/06

Brendon Massei aka Viking Moses, left home on tour at the age of sixteen … ten years later and he still hasn’t returned. An integral part of the resurgent American new folk movement alongside friend and admirer Devendra Banhart and other whimsical, psychedelic patrons such as Apothecary Hymns. His music is almost spiritual, consisting of a soft acoustic guitar here, a piano flourish there and lamenting lyrics that are hard not to embrace. Ever the dust bowl journeyman, Massei still lives in his car traveling between cities… this has 60’s and free love written all over it.
