Save the Faust, Save the World
14/05/07What do you do if your a band that is five-years-ahead-of-its-time? You could be like Faust, who, when they released their debut album in 1971 on Virgin Records, did so at the bargain price of 49p. That’s right. 49p an album. And yes, I’m quite not sure what is more surprising, the price or the fact that Richard Branson was a Faust fan. But they you are. Faust. I love them. I’m not sure why? They are a weird influence on bands that I love—like Beta Band, Stereolab or half the recording artists on Warp Records. They have definitely smashed their head on the kraut-rock with songs that burst past the 30 minutes mark, songs of random noises over teutonic reggae basslines and songs that seemingly explode inside your headspace, and I’m not kidding you, they are actually head explosions underpinned by some of the heaviest basslines that you will ever faltered within. To sample some Faust please click below. Its from 1998 and recording for the John Peel show.

The Icarus Line...
14/05/07Cherrystones and Poptones went down to the Water Rat’s to capture the Icarus Line in their full rock’n’roll glory. And it was hot. We got their late. As advised by Joe. Got Cherrystones on the decks and he was quickly blasting out high-octane rock’n’roll. So hot that the distortion started to plague our ears and hell, we loved it. And so did the gang of five who were yelling out ‘Turn it Up Louder’ ... so he did. And the rock’n’roll madness took hold. It all set the scene perfectly for the Icarus Line who were full-on rock’n’roll. Joe consumed the place. I can’t describe it other than Altamont ... pure, nasty, violent rock’n’roll. At one point, a crazed king’s cross refugee jumped on stage and Joe snarled ‘Get the fuck away from me motherfucker ... ‘ before jamming into a sped-up glam acid punk version of their new hit ‘Gets Paid’ ... to check out video action please click below.

Poptones MP3 of the Day - Black Moth Super Rainbow
14/05/07No, not another random name generated band conjured up by Super Furry Animals imagination but an actually weird phenomena. A band, led by no trend. No fashion. Falling from the sky almost perfectly formed. This is the super creepy shift; no guitars -only an atmosphere conjured up by electronics and the voice box made by aliens on planet prog. Their first track, ‘Forever Heavy’ is Air before Air-were-cool. A horror movie soundtrack for babies that kill underneath a psychedelic-washed sky painted by Syd Barrett and 60’s electronic freak, Bruce Haack. Whilst, ‘The Afternoon Turns Pink’ is a vision of alternative vision of hip-hop invented by kids pushing random things on a casio keyboard at Sears. Imagine if Neil Young re-recording his version of Trans using the Flaming Lips as his back-up band. Its a shock to find out that these kids aren’t strange-being-from-another-star but from Pennsylvania. Neat!
