This has been out for a while now, so if you’ve heard it already it wouldn’t surprise me if your first response was similar to mine – Souls She Said’s debut is not a record that you would’ve expected Joe Cardamone to make. So too bassist Don Devore, but particularly Cardamone; though it was always probable that there would be more to him than his tongue-in-cheek, raised-in-shack-on-the-edge-of-town persona gave away. You can’t spend your entire life drenched in spit and abuse. But even so, there are few moments here, on As Templar Nites, when the proper sore boy of the ‘Line really does lay the flowers thick.

Pennyblackmusic review Souls She Said 'As Templar Nites' - out now!
18/10/06Souls She Said is the side project of Icarus Line singer Joe Cardamone and bassist Don Devore, and one that is obviously related to their main band and yet distinctively different at the same time. The songs on ‘As Templar Nites’ are certainly more danceable than those you would find on an Icarus Line album, but are obviously still influenced by Iggy Pop and the Stooges, as well as US underground indie rock. Souls She Said are also a much brighter sounding band than the Icarus Line, with more prominent melodies and even some reasonably sweet chord progressions.

Souls She Said reviewed by Alternative Ulster!
16/10/06The Icarus Line were one of the sickest bnads of the new millennium, a viscous collision of white-hot, post-hardcore noise and sleaze until they rumoured to split amongst rumours of in-fightning and drug abuse. Souls She Said is a collaboration between ‘Line singer Joe Cardamone and bassist Don Davore (ex-Ink and Dagger).
‘As Templar Nites’ is the follow up to the debut EP ‘Rub The Sleep Out’on Alan McGee’s Poptones label - a pairing that makes total sense. ‘Distralia’ and ‘River Bloat’ rumble with the deadpan melodics of Jesus and Mary Chain while a re-recorded ‘Rub The sleep Out’ burns with a ‘Loveless’ intensity. Opening track ‘Sunken City’ is a scratchy take on New Order’s euphoric dance rock. ‘As Nites’ Templar also sways with the druggy, swagger of Royal Tru at their Stones-biting best.
‘As Templar Nites’ ain’t a bad way to spend 25 minutes. Expect cool things from the house of Souls She Said.

Hecklerspray reviews Souls She Said
09/10/06If someone handed you a CD and told you it was made by an offshoot of frightening rawk beasts The Icarus Line, what would you expect it to sound like? Like the sort of thing the CIA plays a terrorists to make them confess their crimes, probably.
And you’d be wrong, because that Icarus Line offshoot is As Templar Nites by Souls She Said, and - thankfully - it’s a whistlestop, nine-track, 25-minute tour of the most scuzzily exciting places in danceable vaguely art rock indie around. And that means As Templar Nites by Souls She Said sounds like every band you’ve ever liked, you lucky beggars.

As Templar Nites
Los Angeles Goths’ Ad-Libbing Side Project
Souls She Said is a colloboration between Joe Cardomone, singer with the Stooges obsessed LA gloomrockers The Icarus Line, and guitarist Don Devore of West Coast goth act Ink and Dagger, and their second release (following an EP last year) is a scattershot collection of shoegazing guitars, electronic pulses and broken beats. Recorded last summer in Australia, these nine songs switch between opiated Jane’s Addiction-type psychedelia ("Sunken City") and jagged dance punk ("Four on the Floor") which betrays the improvised nature of the music here. But at its best, As Templar Nites is a classic.

New Noise reviews As Templar Nites!
27/09/06And remember everyone, the sister band of the Icarus Line is released on Poptones Records on the 9th of October. To order your own copy please click here.
What would you imagine an Icarus Line sister band to sound ike? Just think about that for a second. What would you imagine it to sound like? Well, after careful consideration of such an excursion, it’s still deceptively hard to say. In fact, if you asked the band, its unlikely they’d know how to answer the question themselvese!
This debut is an enticing prospect. The list of comparisons to other contemporaries is nigh on endless. So much so that each song could plausibly be a completely different band. Opening with by far the strongest cut, ‘Sunken City,’ Souls She Said hit out with a ranging, flitting dance track set to a coupe of jagged guitar stabs before opening into the best song Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah have never written. The lazy vocals, slurring through a concaved guitar/beats track to great effect.
