Black Affair in Pitchforkmedia.com Shock...

12/12/06

When it’s not King Biscuit Time for former Beta Band frontman Steve Mason, it’s apparently Black Affair time. “Possibly the best known and most discussed modern songwriters and thinkers,” according to the act’s MySpace (golly, seems we’re behind the times here), Black Affair dish out retro beatbox electro and synth pop, slightly spacey, slightly disco, sometimes seedy, generally fun.

Because Black Affair prefer to shroud themselves (himself?) in secrecy, it’s unclear whether it’s just Mason making the racket or whether he’s grooving in cahoots with some cohorts (presumably the former). Band members, according to that nutty MySpace page? “??????????????????”

Anyhow, what we do know: Black Affair has four tracks streaming from his/its/their/thurr MySpace right now, a video, and a podcast on the Olo Radio website linked via Poptones (home to Mason’s King Biscuit Time).

The new tunes include seedy come-on cut “It Goes Like This”, the spacey, clip-cloppy “You and Me”, synth call-and-response ditty “Japanese Happening”, and breezy, cheesy love jam “Will She Come”.  To read the rest of the article and listen and view Black Affair click here.

Fact Magazine reviews King Biscuit Time’s latest release....

Steve Mason climbs from the rubble of the Beta Band with a fine solo
album that should satiate the appetites of those mourning his former
band’s untimely death. You know the steez: monkish vocals, airy
melodies, and loping beats - more loveable than earth shattering.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Poptones But Were Afraid To Ask Part 2

07/06/06

Hi!

We take a break from obsessively watching the Big Brother website (Housemate sits on chair!  Housemate makes breakfast!) to give you a Poptones News Update!

Change of Name!

First up—Poptones is changing the name!  In accordance to our bylaws as set by Alan McGee, he thinks a name change should be order to reflect all the changes that have happened to the label.  The name change being: Poptones Recording Corporation.  Why?  Because Cherrystones kept on referring to Poptones as the Poptones Recording Corporation to him at Dead Meadow and it just sorta’ stuck.  Hooray!

Pitchfork review King Biscuit Time

23/05/06

King Biscuit Time
Black Gold
[Poptones; 2006]
Rating: 7.5

The Beta Band at the turn of the millennium were a big, wet, slobbery kiss of too much at a time when so many bands were content to dole out single-serving power pop tunes like misers in bowl cuts. It’s probably stretching it to call them the turn-of-the-millennium Faust when they were more like the British equivalent of an Elephant 6 band (less Brian Wilson, more Jamaica). But they certainly share that German band’s lazy countryside psychedelia, love of jump cuts, and general stoner hobbit humor. Who could hate such good natured, effusive goofballs?
