Read the latest review of Icarus Line opening up for Wolfmother...

05/03/07

And remember that we are doing the vinyl on the 24th of May and the cd is coming out on V2

Wolfmother performed Led Zeppelin’s Communication Breakdown during the extended encore for its set Saturday night in the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion. It was considerably less surprising than, say, Fall Out Boy choosing Zeppelin. The various influences evident in the young Australian band’s sound also include Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer and even artier late-1960s groups such as Spirit.

In fact, as he fronted the power trio for the opening Dimension, lead singer and guitarist Andrew Stockdale looked a bit like Spirit’s guitarist Randy California in his big Afro and gnarly facial hair. The tune not only featured a bridge that Spirit might have written but a guitar solo that sailed with harmonic accents and a tone as solid yet quicksilver as California’s own.

Then again, it suggested Cream and Blue Cheer, as well. Like listening to the band’s self-titled 2006 debut, hearing Wolfmother live could easily have been sunk by an over-eager ear for musical precedents. White Unicorn would have been reduced to its Rush-like vocal line, Woman wouldn’t get past its School’s Out chords, Black Sabbath would be heard everywhere and even Yes might be found.

Joe from the Icarus Line interviewed for Straight.com

23/02/07

And remember folks and freaks, the CD is coming out on V2 on the 24th of May.  And Poptones is doing the Vinyl.  Dim Mak is out with their US version on the 21st of June.  And man ... the album rocks.

Icarus Line’s songs are designed to challenge
Music Previews By Mike Usinger
Publish Date: February 22, 2007

The last couple of years haven’t been great for the Icarus Line, and not just because the band’s former record label, V2, doesn’t exist anymore and one of its guitarists was poached by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. What’s more disconcerting to singer Joe Cardamone is the way the listening habits of the world have changed in the wake of the iTunes revolution.

“People don’t really buy albums as a whole piece anymore, so what’s the point of making them as a whole piece?” the frontman asks, on the line from his Los Angeles home. “When people are so busy putting together their own play lists and sequencing songs on their computers, they lose their taste for albums the way that they were meant to be listened to. They’re no longer able to appreciate songs that were meant to be experienced in a certain order.”

How does this affect the Icarus Line? Well, as evidenced by last year’s Black Presents EP, the band doesn’t traffic in easily digested singles. In the tradition of 2005’s V2-released Penance Soiree , the disc delivers a designed-to-challenge roar of dark-garden grunge, Stooges stun metal, and amphetamine-charged art-pop. All mega-drone guitars and fever-moan vocals, “Watch Your Step” dares to imagine alt-rock as something sexy and dangerous, while “Fshn Fvr” updates the apocalypse-now mope-pop of the Jesus and Mary Chain for modern junkies. With its feedback fire squalls, tribal-thump drums, and utterly indecipherable lyrics, the synapse-frying “Black Presents” can’t be accused of pandering to the masses, but give the Icarus Line’s songs some time and they eventually prove addictive.
