Often enough, you may hear it claimed that “science proves” that the bumblebee is physically incapable of flight, no matter what actual bumblebees may be doing, in temperate climes, at this very moment. This flightlessness thing is, of course, a bit of a myth. On the face of it, one might equally claim that my beloved and I are provably incompatible, and yet nearly twenty-one years on in our marriage we seem to maintain our altitude with the best of the bees. That said, I will not be singling out today—St. Valentine’s—as one on which I am any more devoted than usual to the lady in question than I am on any other day. Devoted I am, devoted I shall remain. And—a fortunate thing for me, as it was for Roger Rabbit—I make her laugh.

The sole redeeming feature of Whitney Houston’s galactically successful recording of “I Will Always Love You “ is that it produced a slew of songwriting royalties for Dolly Parton (seen here in 1974—introduced by the late, great Buck Owens—performing her song on CBS Television’s Hee Haw):
Personally, I loathe the Whitney Houston version: she presses the drama past the breaking point and compounds her sins by creating the model for innumerable painfully-emotive-and-filigreed-but-empty American Idol performances. *shudder*

Yet, it was his main job as the beats maestro for Voice of the Seven Woods that he truly got Poptones attention—why? He handed us a demo of a track and told us - all his recordings are based on just drums and hints of moog. Yes. The new single you are about to hear ‘Council of Desperation’ is built out of drums. Cherrystones and The Laughing Windows play Rites of Spring -- the Greenman Spin Off Festival!
14/02/07The first DJs have been confirmed for the Rite Of Spring equinox celebration in March. Gruff Rhys and The Earlies are among those joining the mix of music, cinema and general madness in the Black Mountains…
Rite Of Spring takes place in Baskerville Hall, Powys, Wales, from 23-24 March.
A spin-off from the hugely successful Green Man Festival, the two day event has also confirmed The Laughing Windows, The Fence Collective, Cherrystones, Andy Votel and Jonny Trunk for DJing duties.
The party runs from sunset to sunrise each night and entertainment includes guest DJs, psych folk cinema and silent films with live music accompaniment.
Expect also a few witches and druids, alongside pagan puppet shows and holistic therapies.
Accommodation is available within the stately Baskerville Hall, from sunken baths to bunk rooms, or you can fend for yourself in the nearby town of Hay-on-Wye.
