Losing Today review the Singleman Affair's Oh To Say/Leaving a Mark!
09/02/07he Singleman Affair ‘Oh to say’ (Poptones).
We’d be the first to self administer a timely kick up the backside for stupidly letting this nugget get lost in the ever bulging CD pile. But get lost it did and found it we have. The Singleman Affair is in reality not a band or collective of talented musicians crafting an art of song writing thought lost, and if not lost then certainly believed to exist in the same was it real or did we dream it mystique as forms fables - but just one man - Dan Schneider. Schneider for his part carves gems from an archaic song craft - sometimes haunting often enchanting (just check out the nimbly drawn, deftly plucked and aching ‘Elaine‘). Whispery in texture these softly shimmering melodies are rooted with a timeless accent - if you didn’t know better you’d swear they’d been rare un-catalogued morsels from the 60’s unearthed in a long since disused Aladdin’s cave of a warehouse once belonging to a major label. One album under his belt the well received ’Let’s kill the summer’ (which to much gnashing of teeth we somehow missed) brought a wealth of comparisons to such artists as Cohen, Stevens, Harwood and Walker and listening to these three cuts featured here its easy to see why. Refined with a beguiling breathless beauty these gems breezily reveal with fleeting softness elements of the 60’s Cambridge scene succulently dipped with the merest washes of West Coast glow via a brief detour through the more delicately envisaged kaleidoscopic meets pastel outer fringes of the UFO psyche scene. Reference points currently - Clock Strikes 13, the Freed Unit and the Clientele (especially on the spectral ‘Oh to Say’) though retrospectively tracks like the sublime ’Leaving a mark’ hint at an invisible meeting point at the divide between Simon and Garfunkel and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. A absolute revelation. http://www.poptones.co.uk

Singleman Affair makes A Fool in the Forest top-spot...
02/01/07The Singleman Affair - Let’s Kill the Summer
Irony free, drenched in echo, it’s 1967 all over again as Dan Schneider perfectly channels the acoustic vibe of love, mostly using just guitar (or sitar), voice, ambient mics and tons of reverb. Let’s Kill the Summer creates a spare and spacious sonic space for watching the butterflies land in your lover’s hair. The songs are all originals (except for a cover of Nico’s “Little Bird") and they stand on their own, not as pastiche. In 1967, I probably wouldn’t have been interested at all in this music, but at this distance it sounds like just the remedy for contemporary angst and noise. Recommended particularly for those who like the pre-"Mrs. Robinson” folky’s folky songs of Simon and Garfunkel (e.g., “For Emily Wherever I May Find Her” or “Kathy’s Song” or “April Come She Will") and for anyone who missed or misses the self-styled troubadors of that era.
Schneider is based in Chicago, where in a more contemporary and electric mode he fronts the band Hummingbiird (previously endorsed here, in a post that also reveals the origins of “The Singleman Affair” name). The album has been released on the UK label POPTONES and not, so far, domestically. While the album is available as an import, it can be obtained more cheaply as a download from eMusic; also available there—and otherwise existing only as a UK 7-inch—is an additional 3-song EP that includes “Elaine,” a song about Mrs. Robinson’s daughter.
