‘Devendra’s mate pours his heart out’
On first listen, Crosses promises to be the most tweest album ever. After all, it leads with an acoustic version of ‘Michael Row The Boat Ashore’ - already one of the hippiest hyms this side of a church picnic - reworked as a song for a lost lover. Happily it avoids collasping into any goodwill sapping sappiness instead treading a sparse delicate path to folk Edan.
Moses attempts here to recreate the feeling of a live show, leaving the listener feeling that they are eavesdropping on a rehearsal - fitting for the brittle and naked style of some tracks. You suspect this isn’t as close to Daniel Johnston inventiveness or quirkyness as Moses would have hoped, but its a happy, heartfelt and the perfect for the fag-end of a long hot summer.
