Cherrystones in Call the Cops shocka'...

Cherrystones reported into Poptones offices today about the shambles of LA event. It kicked off, with David Holmes and Cherrystones providing the soundtrack for an illegal rave (’88 old school) in Los Angeles when the event was suddenly shut down by helicopters flying overhead and flood lights that were accompanied by the sounds of LAPD going ‘THIS IS THE LAPD’ ‘PLEASE STOP THE PARTY’.....

Mr. Cherrystones is back to rock the psychedelic block party from London to NYC with his new compilation Cherrystones Word.

He can effortlessly turn the dullest event into an iconic happening, having already played with Danger Mouse, Six Organs of Admittance, Edan and the final Libertines shows, to DJ’ing the final freak-outs at All Tomorrow’s Parties and Green Man Festivals. Bands such as Wolf Eyes, Slint and Dead Meadow now personally request him to open their shows and tours.

Poptones was introduced to Cherrystones through his streetmix Entertaining the Unobvious, a raucous, vibrant and new form of rock ‘n’ roll that has seen hundreds of copies selling each month through mail-order, personal email and myspace. Reflecting his punk rock roots, but coming out at a hip-hop angle with an astounding knowledge of music and a native intuition of how to tear shit up in clubs, Cherrystones is the sound of psychedelia-soundtracks-folk-rock-prog-noise-moog-AND-library-records. Music that takes its inspiration from rock ‘n’ roll and applied in a hip-hop context.

Cherrystones is undeniably an excavator of exciting, but unfamiliar genres. Cherrystones Word follows the trend set by his previous compilation Cherrystones Rocks and Hidden Charms (released on David Holmes’ label). Cherrystones Rocks (in 2002) pre-empted many sounds that are held in high regard now including the worldwide resurgence of Tropicalia, while tracks from Hidden Charms ended up on the Ocean’s Twelve soundtrack.

Cherrystones Feature in the Record Collector!

As Cherrystones, DJ Gareth Goddard has supplied the psychedelic soundtrack for the All Tomorrow’s Parties and Green Man Festivals, the last Pete Doherty/Carl Barat Libertines shows, Morricone nights at the ICA and moer. He mixes beat-matching and hip-hop aesthetics with a krautrock, psych-rock, prog rock, punk rock freakbeat to turn ‘the dullest event into thee iconic happening’.

When he isn’t DJ’ing, Gareth is in a band called Prey, with Barry 7 from Add N to X. They have completed a forthcoming album with a ‘mad electronic vibe’. On October 23rd, he follows up his acclaimed 2002 Cherrystones Rocks compilation of psych rock oddities with a nwe collection, called Cherrystones Word on Poptones on the 23rd of October.

Godsy is Gareth Goddard, otherwise known to the record collecting cognoscenti under his Cherrystones moniker. Previously he recorded a set of delightfully eccentric EPs on Twisted Nerve and compiled the acclaimed “Cherrystones Rocks” collection of psyche rock oddities back in 2002. Even though we’re accustomed to Whatever We Want’s expectation-swerving, we weren’t quite prepared for five such archaic of scores. “Trickling Core” is an ear canal syringing avant coda and “Jealous Of Gala” has a semblance of strumming, underpinned by dangerously tense bass chords. Out of the two EPs “Wounding Tricks” and “Widows Weeds” are the easiest on the ear, being mellow if slightly disturbed keyboard tuning and acoustic / electric finger picking respectively.

Gareth Goddard, better known as Cherrystones, is the acting “secret weapon” of the Poptones Recording Corporation, wrapping and warping his extensive vinyl collection and obscure film knowledge into the most insane aural film trailer you’ve ever seen; one filled with car chases, T&A, struck poses, intense Carnaby St. haute couture of the late-’60s and early-’70s (complete with liquid eyeliner), gasoline explosions, and fathoms-deep pronouncements met to red, raging, saucer-eyed acceptance. Seeing this guy spin a set had me doing windmills on the Rubulad dancefloor (effectively clearing things out; sorry if I hit you). He’s my favorite selector of the group; instead of mining the deepest cuts à la Andy Votel or sticking to one genre as many of his like-minded compatriots might, Cherrystones throttles through tracks with hard-charging melodies, super-saturated breaks, and bright, flashing arrangements across garage, ye-ye, soundtracks, rocksteady and dub, hard rock, glam, Krautrock, bubblegum, Middle Eastern psych, funk, post-punk and every other extreme corner of maniacal sound from the underground, from the ‘60s up to today. Already well-known for his excellent import compilations Rocks and Hidden Charms, which unearthed Niagara, Pugh Roegefeldt, Marsha Hunt and the Shocking Blue to a new generation of eager crate-diggers, this is the second in a series of his anonymous mix CDs, cramming dozens of records from disparate yet equally monged genres into a restless, mindbending mix. Selections include material from Dion, the (glam) Damned, Aphrodite’s Child, Q 65, the Wipers, Simply Saucer, and a bracing post-punk mashup of Big L’s “Put It On.” More DJs ought to aspire to the ridiculous peaks that seem to come second nature to guys like Cherrystones; Crawl Back to Mine is a partially completed map to such a euphoria. Cherrystones Plays D-Percussion..

The line up has been announced for this years DPercussion festival, and cor blimey it’s good.

Aim, Cherrystones, The Pipettes, The Longcut and Skinnyman have all been lined up for this years Castlefield festival.

Last month we told you the annual Manchester festival was under threat due to a shortfall in the budget. But then you told us you’d be happy to pay to get into the event and along with a new sponsor it’s been saved!

DPercussion is happening on August 5 12pm - 10.30pm and organisers are asking for a donation of £2 on the door.

If you’re expecting some beautiful QV soundscapes or chugging MOA Balearica just because this is on Whatever We Want, then you really need to prepare yourself, because Gareth ‘Cherrystones’ Goddard’s Godsy is more like a dose of Sunn 0))) down your fragile lugholes. I know we’ve mentioned Goblin before in relation to QV’s tripped-out sample arrangements, but Godsy’s electric discord, feedback fuzz and overloaded valve amps are even closer to the Italian horror rockers. The five tracks on his debut EP for the label are anarchic doom-laden devices of synthesized torture that only the most suicidal DJ could ever think of playing down the local lotion-filled bar.
