Poptones.co.uk opens up the CIA file marked Cherrystones…

Mr. Cherrystones is back to rock the psychedelic block party from London to NYC with his forthcoming compilations ‘Cherrystones Word’ (as a part of a Cherrystones series of compilations) ...  prepare to engaged and be destroyed by Cherrystones as you fall backwards through the best moments of 1001 obscuro psychedelic battalion records. 

Trust us. It is deemed to be the year of the Cherrystones.  Applying a much learned hip-hop aesthetic and beat-matching to the varied freak show of kraut-rock, psychedelic, folk, prog and punk rock .. he effortlessly turns the dullest event into thee iconic happening and with secret origins,being ‘haunted chapels, weird religious cults in the south of France as a child, Pink Floyd and throwing up outside shops whilst the sky flashes, kung fu kicks, garage, punk, psych, hip hop and me and my shadow.’

Poptones was introduced to Cherrystones through his streetmix ‘Entertaining the Unobvious’ ...it was exciting, vibrant and a new form of rock’n’roll.  Cherrystones put a new insignia on music. Cherrystones’ mix ‘Entertaining the Unobvious’ reflected his punk rock roots coming out at a hip-hop perspective with an astounding knowledge of music and how to tear up shit in clubs with sourced inspiration outside of the hip-hop world and into another - that of: psychedelia-soundtracks-folk-rock-prog-noise-moog-library-records and in doing so came up with a new form of music. Music that takes its inspiration from rock’n’roll and applied in a hip-hop context. With the seemingly bizarre manifesto that beats can be found anywhere. Whether in obscure punk rock records like Surburban Lawns to northern soul 7s like Johnny Talbot, what struck us was how vital it seemed ... putting fresh excitement into the dusty rock’n’roll records that may have been forgotten about .... rock’n’roll records that are only praised by cult number ... only heard by very few .... this one man chemical brother Cherrystones applies CPR to b-music.

It blew Poptones.co.uk mind.

It was rock’n’roll from another world.

Cherrystones has quickly become the young sound of London so we gotta ask –What is the future of rock’n’roll?  “The great thing is now there are heavy duty diggers turning up weirder and more obscure discoveries like Baris Manco, Selda, Klaus Weiss, Niagara that all fit the bill in searching for the perfect beat plus artists like my good friend Edan who marry these ideals and concepts as a hip hop vision.’

Cherrystones Word is more than a holier-than-thou collection, Cherrystones hits it off with his compilation—and hits it hard like only a hip-hop DJ coming from a psychedelic punk life could do.  Cherrystones Word is a look into the future world of sampling, the sound of the streets, today, not yesterday, drawing freshing inspiration from ..."Bambaataa,Dj Kool Herc,Cold Crush Brothers ,Ultimate Breaks and Beats and Octopus records comps and cult-figurehead, Lenny Roberts a key background figure who sourced a lot of obscure records.”

Another influence is the accidents on the dancefloors that were inspirations “Its all about a vision of the future that stems from past mistakes or accidents in music, ie; records that sound now although they are from then .. when Afrika Bambaataa was running this kind of
method by playing Kraftwerks’- “Trans Europe Express “(although it was actually a lot more contemporary than retro at this point) to a bunch of kids looking for kicks without any fear of it being corny, and it worked, yet again the Krautrock shines through!

And yet, it is not a trainspotter guide for the record geek, the mixes flow like some random radio from planet dada. From the geerage punk, french ye-ye rock, folk, psychedelia, soundtracks, Italian prog-horror-rock and the righteous kraut-rock.

But its still punk rock to Cherrystones “Its part of the rebel music culture and community, the same things that led me to punk and all the music i love- simple loves and fears, rejection,isolation,unity through groups and gangs and a heap of teenage adrenalin all mixed with adolescence- that’s enough to fuel any teenage head looking for thrills.”
