Fence Records presents
FENCE @ PITTENWEEM 2006
with The Fence Collective and special guests
Tuesday 8th - Friday 11th August, 2006
as part of the Pittenweem Arts Festival, Fife, Scotland
Tickets £10 each night, available from http://www.thefenceshop.com
Since 2004, Fence Records has provided a weeks-worth of musical
nourishment as part of Pittenweem’s Art Festival ... and we’re back
again this year!
The East Neuk of Fife, in Scotland, is home to FENCE RECORDS - a
micro-indie music label , with a resolute D.I.Y. work ethic, and a
healthy assortment of musical styles and facial hair. The label’s
output is reserved exclusively for members of THE FENCE COLLECTIVE - a
loose-knit amalgam of singer-songwriters, musicians, bands and
electronic artists, who collaborate with one another on record, as well
as on stage. Well known members include KING CREOSOTE, JAMES YORKSTON,
LONE PIGEON and KT TUNSTALL. The Collective’s music is often described
in the press as “folk” - and, while this isn’t strictly true in the
traditional sense, their tendency to hand-down and share songs with one
another is very much in the folk spirit.
TUESDAY 8TH AUGUST - ADRIAN CROWLEY (with band!)
Adrian Crowley is a firm Fence fave. The Dublin singer-songwriter has
performed at our Homegame Festival for the past two years, and has just
completed recording his fouth album with James Yorkston. His voice has
a remarkably warm lilt, that reverberates straight through you - his
sonorous songs being the perfect backdrop for watching the sun
disappear. He’ll be performing with members of Adem and The Elysian
Quartet. Do not miss!
WEDNESDAY 9TH AUGUST - JAMES YORKSTON & THE ATHLETES
Our first great export! Singer-songwriter, James Yorkston, hails from
the East Neuk, and currently resides in Edinburgh. He writes mostly
original material, but also arranges and performs some traditional
songs. His own songs are placed in the here and now, but are delivered
(both musically and lyrically) in a language that defies a specific
era. His multi-talented backing band, The Athletes (double bass/banjo,
drums/lap-steel and piano/accordion), complement this fusion of the
contemporary and the traditional - switching between soft/understated
rhythms and whirling dervishes. This is explored further on James’
forthcoming third album (The Year of the Leopard, due for release in
September) and we’ve been told that he’ll be test-running some of the
new material for this show - so it’s a must see for fans!
THURSDAY 10TH AUGUST - EMMA POLLOCK and VIKING MOSES
We’re extremely chuffed to announce that Glaswegian singer-songwriter,
Emma Pollock, will be performing at this year’s festival shows. Emma
sang with legendary Scots band, The Delgados - who, over their 10 years
together, released five truly classic albums and received a Mercury
Prize Nomination. They disbanded in 2005, to concentrate on the
running of their label, Chemikal Underground - but Emma’s is
continuing to record music. She’s now signed a deal with London label,
4AD, and will be releasing her solo debut within the next year. Her
songs are mesmerising - folky waltzes, driven by a pure voice.
Brendan Massei is Viking Moses, a travelling American songwriter who
has managed to avoid much critical attention despite touring non-stop
for the past decade. His music veers between delicate and gutteral -
one minute he’ll be softly humming a blissed-out summer tune, and the
next he’ll be singing/wailing/bellowing straight from his belly. His
cover of the Dolly Parton classic ‘I Will Always Love You’ is perhaps
the most emotionally gut-wrenching performance ever committed to
record!
FRIDAY 11TH AUGUST - THE SKYGREEN LEOPARDS
To round off our week in true Fence style, we’ve invited the
psychedelic free-folk sounds of The Skygreen Leopards. They are a
five-piece, from sunny San Francisco, and are part of the Jewelled
Antler Collective/Label - a “loose assortment of prolific groups” who
swap instruments with one another, and create brand new songs. Can you
guess why we invited them, now?!
The shows run from 8pm until late each night. Tickets are on sale from
http://www.thefenceshop.com, and cost £10 for each night. You can save
yourself some dosh by buying a week-long pass, which gets you into all
four events for the measly sum of £30!
It really is a top event - and a great place to be with friends. After
each show, we’ll be going to the pub for last orders, and a good ol’
boozy sing-song ... so come along!
