The Singleman Affair - Top Ten

01/02/06

Poptones.co.uk’s new signing The Singleman Affair follows in the footsteps of our other new act Cherrystones by laying down a top ten to get inside his head. To read what has been rotating on The Singleman Affair’s stereo please click below.

1.  I Feel Like I’m a Fixin to Die - Country Joe and the Fish

This was one of the first psychedelic records that really hit me hard, it mixes
bits of political unrest, mind expansion, depression, fear, and finding someone
to fall in love with. This album will always remind me of driving down to new
orleans with my brother driving through road construction, torrential rain
storms, and delirium at 3 in the morning doing 85 mph.

2.  Ride the Wind – The Youngbloods

Only had a limited vinyl release on jesse colin young’s raccoon record lable in
the early 70’s. This live album reminds me of pieces of sunshine sitting on my
window sill as my mind wakes up in the morning. The 6 1/2 minute version of the
song Sunlight is one of my favorite recordings ever.

3.  Nelson Angelo E Joyce – Joyce and Nelson Angelo

What would it sound like if jim o’rourke and astrud Gilberto made a record with
members of animal collective, that’s was this record sounds like, only it was
recorded in 1972 on the odeon label. A definitive must have.

4.  London Conversation – John Martyn

One of John’s first records and his writing ability hasn’t blossomed to the
point of greatness seen in “Solid Air”, however his guitar playing is unreal
and you can catch a rare glimpse of a young song writer just beginning to
realize what he is capable of.

5.  Hey Day: BBC Radio Sessions, 1968-1969[UK] – Fairport Convention

Some of the best Fairport convention material recorded live at the BBC, when
the band was hitting its upper echelon of creativity. Richard Thompson’s guitar
tone has a velvet underground john cale feel to it and Sandy Denny’s voice will
make any man buckle to his knees and pay homage to the ground she walks. Also
has some really cool Leonard cohen covers on it.

6.  Lorca – Tim Buckley

More abstract and unstructured than his other records and I think that is why I
like this one so much. “I had a talk with my woman” has such moments of reality
in them I feel like an intruder in this man’s life.

7.  Something Else Again – Richie Havens

Themes of racism, injustice, love, life, and the general pursuit of happiness
all brought together with sitar drones, un-fucking-real guitar strumming,
classic havens style, all awhile invoking a certain kind of melancholy one
cannot explain.

8.  The Sunny Side of Life – The Blue Sky Boys

Haunting murder ballads sung as sweet as darling angels. This is one of the
first recordings that changed my entire perception of traditional “folk” music.
Check out the song “Beautiful, Beautiful Brown Eyes”

9.  Zabriski’s Point (Soundtrack)

Probably the best soundtrack ever assembled, featuring songs from john fahey,
pink floyd, the grateful dead, The Youngbloods, Kaleidescope, and Roscoe
Holcombe

10.  Days in the Wake – Palace

I mean if it wasn’t for this record I may not have decided to record on my own
at all. This record was the inspiration for me to stop worrying about record
labels and the record industry and just worry about recording songs in my bed
room with a four track. Lyrical poems set to the sounds of the failure of god
and love. “When you have no one…no one can hurt you…”
