Sometimes the most promising bands are those who have no concept of what’s a bad idea. Witness Sailboats Are White, a sassy half-industrial/half-hardcore act who try ripping Big Black but end up a snotty self-satisfied late-era Blur. If the “Led Eye” vocals weren’t such an afterthought, Sailboats would be a hell of a lot more listenable. But as is, there’s just some muffled blubbering about finding a “new place” before the singer wishes intestinal cancer on the listener (though not before poking your eye out with a pencil). Then come the Muzak keyboards, wet straight-though-the-boards guitar, and one big, heartfelt “Whoo!” The whole thing sounds like a gimmick gone horribly awry, like “The Rockafeller Skank” mixed with “Territorial Pissings”. A total mess, but a sincere blast.
