http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/captain_beefheart_electricity_live_1968/
Not all of rock’n’roll’s excesses comes from drink or drugs—an easy excess would be one of Poptones recent purchases - Grow Fins - a five CD box set of Captain Beefheart rarities and demos from 1965 to 1985. Poptones listened to this in one sitting for the period of one work day and began to see in colours and thought that shopping on Venus would be a good idea. Too much Beefheart into the system, even that of a casual user, is always advised.

http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/colossal_yes_honeycreeper_smiles/
Colossal Yes is the brainchild of the keyboardist and piano man for Comets on Fire. Don’t be afraid though—this isn’t the stoner-rock guitar odyessy of yore—instead, a gentle foray into the world of piano ballads. Hey! Stay awake at the back as this is great. With touches of Bill Fay meeting the fey Bobby Gillespie vocals of ‘85 Primal Scream, Honey Creeper Smiles is a cool-as-fuck offering from the solo-sideshow-fest that is Comets on Fire.2006-09-14T11:10:53+00:00The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard
http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/the_seeds_pushin_too_hard/
Some songs are so perfect that it becomes easily forgotten exactly why those songs are so perfect. Pushin’ Too Hard is one of those songs. Sure, the majority of the Seeds output after Pushin’ Too Hard was very similar to their big hit but wasn’t that the point of geeridge rock revolution? But whatever the case, with the introduction of the rockin’ organ, Sky Saxon will forever be remembered as a rock god.2006-09-08T14:14:35+00:00The Legend! - Seattle Part 3
http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/the_legend_seattle_part_3/
Everett True. The first-ever-single on Creation Records as the Legend! A weirdo-walking zeitgist. A DIY broken jazz fest. From Alan McGee, Sub Pop through to Vincent Gallo, the Legend incorporates all the bizarre influences through the word-pop processor of the Legend’s head and has come up with this —Seattle --- a girl group reading lost love letters to a Joe Meekish track that sounds like it was recorded by the best undiscovered crack band on Holloway Road opening up for Jesus and Mary Chain in ‘84. Its genius. I love it.

http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/califone_pastry_shapes/
Having grown up from the post-hard-core band Red Red Meat, Califone have turned into a non-boring version of Calexico. Its all hazy and lazy psychedelia with a touch of the 70s Hotel California as they explore C and W country by way of the nearest alt.com mall.Kill City2006-08-25T10:27:16+00:00The Shaggs - I'm So Happy That You Are Near
http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/the_shaggs_im_so_happy_that_you_are_near/
The ultimate outsider girl group, the Shaggs were a trio of three girls playing in a hot garage band that didn’t know how to play. With their home-spun lyrics and philosophies, the Shaggs represented some sort of weird universal truth but without any of the passion-play or clever or ... well ... talent. But the lack of talent drove them to accidentally make a classic and invent an entire new genre of Kurt Cobain approved indie music.2006-08-25T10:10:13+00:00The Sonics - Have Love Will Travel
http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/the_sonics_have_love_will_travel/
Geeridge rock. Its addictive. Go on the internet and there are tonnes of forums solely dedicated to the pursuit of dusty old 7inchs in flea markets and car boots or crazily priced on Ebay. Why? Its that early excitement of rock’n’roll. The first punk rock. The first chords bashed out in some garage in the mid-west that hit the world or not. Of course, alot of it is rubbish and of course, you can’t mention it too the fanatics of geeridge rock because they would simply look you up and down and tell you that the friendship is over. However, with some of the garage rock bands you can’t go wrong—The Sonics are one of them—forget that this was in a car advert and just listen to it—hard, heavy, pounding beat—this is the primevil dark heart of Vietnam-wrong-America and its brilliant.2006-08-21T13:13:02+00:00The Skygreen Leopards - Julie Anne, Patron of Thieves
http://www.poptones.co.uk/index.php?/mp3_blog/more/the_skygreen_leopards_julie_anne_patron_of_thieves/
The Skygreen Leopards originate from the Bay Area-based Jewelled Antler forest of bands. Donaldson co-founded the Jewelled Antler label in 1999, which has since released over 25 CD-R’s ranging from straight field recordings & outdoor improv-folk to noise & fractured pop music. The Skygreen Leopards are without a doubt the most structured and accessible of these projects. Much of the Jewelled Antler music is recorded live outdoors on mini-discs & boomboxes while the Skygreen Leopards primarily focus on a surreal form of multi-layered folk-pop recorded on an old reel-to-reel housed in a moldy trailer on the back of a horse ranch. 12-string guitars, banjos, dulcimers, Jew’s harps, organs, maracas, mandolins, harmonicas, ocarinas & reed flutes harmonize with the field-recorded songs of birds, barnyard animals & insects. This hedge of sounds is the backdrop for Quinn & Donaldson’s mythological rants & hazy melodies.
And don’t forget that the Skygreen Leopards are playing on the 17th of August—for more information please click here.2006-08-15T15:47:55+00:00
