The Paddingtons -First Comes First - What more can we say? Except its essential tuff-teen-punk. Get your copy for only £8.99
Alexander Tucker - Genius, weird spectral folk from All Tomorrow’s Parties. Sounds like Bob Dylan meeting up with the Omen soundtrack. Geniunely spooky. Alexander Tucker is playing at In the Pines on the 16th of November
Toolshed- The mainman for 808 State, Graham Massey gets all wyrd on yr ass with his forthcoming opus Toolshed. Toolshed are also playing the Cornerhouse in Manchester on the 5th of November. Check here for more details
Barberella Soundtrack Barberella, psychedelia... How could we not love this derangement into easy listening weirdness? Indeed!
Primal Scream - Gentle Tuesday - Before the Primals were hard-core sound terrorists, they were the tuff Byrds beat group of yesteryear. Poptones.co.uk found this 7’ in amongst the indie but really shouldn’t there be a section for utter class?
Residual Echoes - Phoenician Flu and Ancient Ocean- Wyrd rockers from Santa Cruz. If the first track of Death Comes for The Archbishop doesn’t slay you with its Flaming-Lips-with-a-bad-agressive-speed-problem doesn’t slay you then fuck knows what will. Trashmonk - Mona Lisa Overdrive. Yeah, we released it already. But putting some tracks up on the MP3 blog made me reinvestigate this and you know what? Its a classic album. And we’ve got it up for a fiver in our shop.
Oxes EP - Fuck me. How did this one fall through the radar in the UK? An instrumental band that doesn’t say ‘Hey I’m post rock howsabout you’. With big fuck-off huge monster riffs that are time-warped back from when Kiss ruled and punk rock was in its infancy this is nothing but ROCK-AND-FUCKING-ROLL. For more information about the Oxes please go here.
Dungen - 1999 - 2001 - Still haven’t gotten over our Dungen obsession. How could we? To read more about Dungen please click here
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - Poptones.co.uk had to listen to this to clean out the crap that the Tortoise and Bonnie Prince Billy did this song.
Cherrystones - Entertaining the Unobvious. Whilst we wait for the new mix ‘Crawl Back To Mine’, Cherrystones is offering a ten minute cut of Entertaining the Unobvious. And its a good ‘un. But is it as good as the forthcoming Poptones compilation? You’ll just have to wait and see. To get inside Gareth’s headspace please click here
The Juan MacLean Experience - More DFA inspired madness.
Bonnie Prince Billy - Summertime in the Sound - A fucking fantastic live album, that brought Poptones.co.uk back to the glory days when Neil Young would release live albums once a year. This is for the true believers who don’t think that Bonnie Prince Billy is the Counting Crows for the post-rock set.
Devendra Banhart - Long Haired Child - The sister song to boy genius Crosby’s Almost Cut My Hair.
Jackie O Motherfucker - Various Tracks - They are the drone kings. Whilst listening to their new album on All Tomorrow’s Parties, I fell asleep and awoke to a weird bad-acid-trip world ... where I’m soon to recover?
