Viking Moses - Sandstorms/I Will Always Love You
The mighty Brendan Massei continues his infiltration of the UK but the first stop for any potential Viking Moses fan has to be this beautiful 7” ... only 500 copies available and when its gone, its gone. And at £1.50 its a steal. Buy it now, wait three months and the Ebay freaks will pay extortionate values for it. Or just do as Poptones does, keep it and love it because its ace. The Fence Collective has said ‘I Will Always Love You ... that’s just really sinister isn’t it?’

Two Lone Swordsmen - Further Reminders
Joe, The Icarus Line singer said to me ‘Man ... we really want to have a Two Lone Swordsmen mix for Souls She Said album ..’ though at the time Poptones.co.uk have never heard any of their records, we bluffed it by a mumbled response and went out brought their collection of remixes released on Warp. Nice minimal and rather groovy electronic music.
The Planet of the Apes - Soundtrack
The weirded-out percurssive sounds, the flutes .... the crashing cymbals . .. oh god ... WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO THE PLANET? The Planet of the Apes soundtrack is good for the long bus journeys across London so you can look frantically around you and then take off running whilst screaming out ‘APES ... GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OFF ME ...’ However, in the English heat, Poptones.co.uk prefers the Dawn of the Dead soundtrack.
Town and Country - Up Above
Thrill Jockey types move on from post-rock to subtle eastern indian grooves with surprisingly successful results.
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Finally, some nice psychedelic soul in the charts. Poptones approves!
The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers
Pisses over Sgt Peppers from a great height. Just from the nihilstic horror psyche of Artifical Energy about the wonders of taking speed straight through to the horrors of the Vietnam war with Wasn’t Born To Follow. Total genius. And with the CD you get the bonus track of Moog Raga and an argument with the Byrds in the studio! Genius…
The Four Velvet Flies - Ennio Morricone
Morricone stretched the boundaries of what was considered ‘Soundtrack Music’ with the release of Four Velvet Flies, the final trilogy of Dario Argento’s terror movies. The score is completely improvised and leaves a weird sense of dread throughout whilst listening.
Dawn of the Dead - Various
This soundtrack is amazing. Absolutely amazing. When Poptones was returning home from Manchester on what was pretty much a horrendous day of hang overs, we played the soundtrack and sat on the top half of the 91 bus home watching people shuffle around until I was convinced that the people outside were zombies with their pale skin and flip flops.
Karen Dalton - Its So Hard To Tell Who’s Going To Love You The Best
Junkie songstress Karen Dalton was a mate of Tim Hardin’s....her voice is a cracked-up tribute to Billie Holiday’’s with mournful country and western guitars that play in the background.
Hank Williams - Lost Highway
The ultimate spooked driving song. Why? I don’t know ... maybe David Lynch with his own ‘Lost Highway’ movie has reintepreted this into the creep core of yore. Its a classic and we love it at Poptones.
